The Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues star and Joseph Gordon-Levitt both had been rumored to be in the running for the role. But on Monday Gordon-Levitt announced that he is working with Warner Bros. to produce a movie about Sandman, a DC Comics character.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Ant-Man movie will be directed by Edgar Wright and will be released on July 31, 2015. Production is expected to begin next year in Georgia.
Wright, who also co-wrote the script, is known for quirky films such as Hot Fuzz and The Worlds End that balance action, sci-fi and comedy, says THR.
Ant-Man not one of Marvels better-known characters but an original member of the Avengers is the alter ego of Dr. Hank Pym, a scientist who invents a shrinking serum that lets him get tiny and do all kinds of superhero things.
Though final details on the script are unclear, Wright originally planned for the film to involve both Pym and Scott Lang, a reformed thief who became the hero in the comics in the late 1970s.
"The idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both... Henry Pym and Scott Lang," Wright has said in previous interviews.
"So you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60's, in sort of 'Tales to Astonish' mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang's story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him."
News of Rudds casting role pleased the fanboys at MTV, who wrote: Marvel Studios knows a thing or two about a thing or two, and one of the things they know best is casting even if it doesn't always appear that way at first blush.
But all of the naysayers who freaked out when Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Iron Man no longer exist. Downey's work in the film silenced that noise ...
The fan reaction proves that once again, Marvel got it right with their newest leading man.
