Sometimes, the best headline is the one you don’t write. When it comes to Overland Park native and soccer star Matt Besler, the line “Local boy makes good” comes to mind.

There’s no disputing that Besler, who was married this month, has enjoyed the kind of year that transcends cliches. Already the reigning MLS Defensive Player of the Year coming into the season, he started three huge games in 2013 right here in his hometown: the U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup qualifier against Jamaica, the July 31 All-Star Game and the Dec. 7 MLS Cup.

But this smiling Johnson County guy remains down to earth, consistently garnering quiet praise for his behind-the-scenes work throughout the community.

Want to root for a hometown favorite? Besler’s your man.
