Kansas City man sentenced in January killing

Updated: 2013-12-13T22:56:08Z

A January beating death in the 3600 block of Highland Avenue brought an 18-year sentence Friday for a Kansas City man.

Leroy E. Chism, 34, earlier had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the fatal pistol-whipping of Jachin M. Reedy, 25.

Court records said Reedy and Chism had been drinking beer when Chism became upset. Reedy tried to calm Chism down.

“We’re better than this, “ he reportedly said to Chism.

Prosecutors alleged that Chism hit Reedy in the face with a gun, knocking Reedy off a porch onto a sidewalk. He then struck Reedy a second time as Reedy lay on the ground.
