Independence police Tuesday night arrested a teenager accused in a gang sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl last month in Kansas City.

Kansas City police had arrested four teens shortly after the Nov. 14 attack at one teen’s home in the 4000 block of East 68th Street. The fifth teen eluded police until Tuesday night.

Jackson County prosecutors have charged Travell D. Miller, 17, of Kansas City, with sodomy, attempted sodomy, sexual abuse and two counts of assault. Prosecutors recommended a $100,000 bond.

Prosecutors previously charged Jimmy L. Barnes, 18, and Sterling W. Champion, 17, with forcible sodomy. A grand jury later indicted each teen on additional charges related to the attack. Juvenile authorities also detained two younger teens accused in the attack.

The victim told police she had been staying at one juvenile’s home because the utilities had been turned off at her house. She knew all her attackers, police reports said.

According to court records, Barnes and Miller woke her just before 11 a.m. and told her to perform a sex act on them. When the girl refused, the two teens left the bedroom.

They returned with three other teens, and Miller allegedly held her down while they ripped off her clothes and touched her bare skin, including her breasts and genitals. One teen repeatedly burned her body with an incense stick. Barnes and Champion allegedly snapped cellphone photos of her naked body.

The girl broke free, ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. Champion allegedly punched her in the nose, and she cut his arm.

The girl fled to a relative’s home down the street. When officers arrived, they noted the girl had a bloody nose, a bloody lip and swelling to her face as well as small burn marks. She was wearing the relative’s shirt.

When officers went to the home where the attack allegedly occurred, the five teens ran. Officers arrested four of them.
