Two injured in single-vehicle accident in downtown Lawrence

Updated: 2013-12-07T17:28:42Z

An unidentified Topeka driver and his female passenger were taken by Life Flight helicopter to a hospital early Saturday morning with life-threatening injuries after the man crashed his car into a concrete planter in front of a Lawrence business, police said.

The 37-year-old man was driving northbound through downtown Lawrence at a high rate of speed shortly after 3 a.m. when his 2013 white Chevrolet Malibu went out of control and struck the planter, said Sgt. Damon Thomas of the Lawrence Police Department. The accident ejected the driver and trapped his 22-year-old passenger, who had to be extracated from the car by Lawrence firefighters.

No other information was immediately available.
