Northwest Missouri State senior quarterback Trevor Adams was chosen Academic All-American of the Year in Division II football by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Adams is a biology/psychology double major who has a 3.94 grade-point average. The Bearcats, 12-0 and ranked No. 2 in the country, play St. Cloud State (Minn.) at home Saturday in the national quarterfinals.
West Virginia senior forward and Overland Park native Frances Silva, the Big 12 women’s soccer player of the year, was chosen to the Division I all-Central Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. UMKC senior forward Taylor Bare, who set career school records for goals (32), assists (8), points (66), and game-winning goals (12), was chosen to the third team.
Rockhurst junior defender Kasey Lierz, also from Overland Park, made first team Division II all-Midwest Region. Central Missouri senior midfielder Carly Stanley of De Soto made first team Division II all-Central Region along with teammates Cindy and Becky Lackey.
Columbia qualified for the NAIA round of 12 with a second straight pool play victory Wednesday at the national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, but Park was eliminated after a second straight loss.
The Cougars beat Briar Cliff (Iowa) 24-26, 25-23, 22-25, 25-10, 15-12 and play undefeated Texas at Brownsville on Thursday in their final Pool A game. The Pirates lost 25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-22 to Concordia (Calif.). They close the season with a Pool B game against Trinity Christian (Ill.) on Thursday.
MidAmerica Nazarene beat Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in five sets to improve to 1-1 and needs a victory Thursday against Madonna (Mich.) to advance from Pool D.
