A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Kansas City Area Transportation Authority bus on Tuesday evening, shutting down the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 at the Interstate 29 split for five hours.

The side of the bus’s windshield to the right of the driver was broken by the impact. It was not clear why the pedestrian was in the highway. The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating. The name of the person killed was not immediately released.

ATA General Manager Mark Huffer told reporters at the scene it was the bus driver’s first day on the job after graduating first in her class.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m., disrupting rush hour traffic. The highway reopened shortly after 10 p.m.
