Who thought Missouri could win the national championship in college football this season?

At least one bettor at the Las Vegas Hotel Superbook did. The sportsbook offered 500-1 odds in January on Mizzou to win the BCS title, according to Bloomberg News, and sold one ticket. That ticket would have been sold a month after the Tigers finished 5-7 in their first season in the Southeastern Conference.

More bettors at the sportsbook liked Auburn’s chances: 14 tickets offering 1,000-1 odds were sold in January. Auburn finished 3-9 and was winless in the SEC last year.

Auburn plays Missouri for the Southeastern Conference title on Saturday in Atlanta. The winner would likely need help — Ohio State and Florida State are the top two teams in the BCS — to reach the championship game. But it’s possible, and could be costly.

According to Bloomberg, Jeff Sherman, the assistant manager at the LVH Superbook, struggled to recall another example of a long-shot future bet becoming a legitimate possibility for a payout.

“As far as college football goes it’s really rare,” Sherman said Monday.
