The area franchisees for Corner Bakery Cafe are so sold on the concept, they went back to the company and signed an agreement to open even more area restaurants. They may go back again to open more in other states.

Cafe Foods Inc.’s first Corner Bakery Cafe opened this month in Leawood’s Camelot Court, 11705 Roe Ave., Suite A. Customers walk down a main aisle — dining areas are on either side — to the counter where they place their orders and pay. Employees bring the meals to the tables for dine-in customers.

It opens at 6:30 a.m. daily for coffee and then starts serving breakfast at 7 a.m. Breakfast runs all day and includes scramblers like the Anaheim (scrambled eggs with crisp applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes, green onions, cheddar cheese and avocado), along with scrambled egg sandwiches, panini, oatmeal and fresh berry and yogurt parfaits.

The lunch and dinner menu includes specialty salads like the Asian edamame salad (edamame, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, green onions, basil and cilantro in a ginger soy dressing) and the cavatappi pasta salad (roasted tomatoes, Asiago cheese, basil, roasted garlic and arugula with a balsamic dressing), house-made soups and chili.

Corner Bakery Cafe also offers made-to-order signature sandwiches like roast beef and goat cheese on a potato thyme bread and ham or turkey on pretzel bread, grilled panini, pastas including chicken carbonara, and a variety of pastries and desserts.

It is one of only a couple of franchise operations to serve the company’s new hoagie sandwich. The cafe also sells cinnamon creme cake and chocolate bundt cakes to take home.

The next area Corner Bakery Cafe is scheduled to open in February in Corbin Park, at 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. It will take half of a new building.

The company plans to open another area location in mid-2014 and perhaps another in late 2014.

Cafe Foods first signed up to open five restaurants in five years but later agreed for six more. All 11 are scheduled to open in five years. It is currently considering sites in Lenexa, including one near Oak Park Mall and another near 87th Street Parkway and Renner Boulevard, as well as Liberty, Westport and St. Joseph Cafe Foods also is considering signing franchise agreements in other states.

The Dallas-based Corner Bakery Cafe was founded in 1991 and currently has nearly 160 locations.

It is not affiliated with The Corner Restaurant in Westport or the Corner Cafe operations in the Kansas City area.
