Jackson County prosecutors accuse a 49-year-old man of stealing money from donation boxes meant for a children’s charity from a Wal-Mart in Lee’s Summit.

Michael W. Sterbach of Overland Park faces two counts of felony stealing from the Children’s Miracle Network.

The Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 thefts were captured on video surveillance that Lee’s Summit police sent to media outlets and social media. Sterbach turned himself in Tuesday afternoon after learning he was the focus of the police investigation.

According to court records, Sterbach told investigators that he wanted the money to buy crack and that each container had $80 to $90 in it. The containers were valued at $495 each.

Authorities learned that similar thefts had occurred in Excelsior Springs and Leavenworth.
