Before Halloween arrived, many stores started displays for Christmas. ’Tis the season.

Retailers have to start earlier to try to make the bulk of the fourth-quarter sales that they need to land in the black by the end of the year. It also means that more stores are jumping the Thanksgiving Day gun to capture sales that might go to other retailers not taking that holiday off.

J.C. Penney, Kohl’s and Macy’s plan to open Thanksgiving Day instead of waiting until the traditional Friday after the holiday to welcome Christmas shoppers into their stores for much anticipated sales. Target Corp. also announced that it is joining the pack.

More major stores can’t be far behind.

Target also is having 15 online only daily discounts for two weeks, beginning on Sunday before Thanksgiving. No doubt the others will try to beat that to entice holiday shoppers to go their way.
