Paul Bunch scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures as Division II Emporia State beat UMKC 81-76 on Friday at Municipal Auditorium.

Bunch’s dunk with 28 seconds remaining put Emporia State up 79-74.

The Hornets never trailed in the second half and led 75-64 with 2:40 left, but Martez Harrison scored six consecutive points, pulling UMKC within 77-72 with 1:19 remaining.

Emporia State’s Kaleb Wright made two free throws with 1 second remaining and he finished with 17 points.

Trinity Hall had a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards for UMKC. Harrison led the Kangaroos with 20 points, but was just 12-of-21 from the free-throw line.

UMKC is one of six Western Athletic Conference newcomers after spending 19 years in the Summit League. New head coach Kareem Richardson was an assistant at Louisville last season. It was the first regular-season game in the renovated Municipal Auditorium.
