Kansas City will host the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ national convention in 2018, beating out 11 other cities to land the meeting.

Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association officials announced the booking Thursday. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend, with an estimated economic impact of $6.5 million for the local economy. The VFW’s national headquarters is in Kansas City, and the organization last held its national convention here in 2007.

“Kansas City has changed a lot since last hosting our convention in 2007, and we couldn’t be more proud of how the city is evolving,” VFW Adjutant General John Hamilton said in a statement.

The 2018 meeting will be the VFW’s 119th national convention and will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The VFW is working with the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial on commemoration events.

The VFW ranks third among hotel room bookings so far for 2018. The top convention will be the Educational Testing Service, which will meet in Kansas City annually through 2018, bringing more than 26,000 room-nights. Second is USA Volleyball, with its Show-Me Qualifier booking more than 13,000 room-nights annually through 2018.
