‘The Starving Games’: Hungry for humor | 1 star

Updated: 2013-11-06T22:56:23Z

Rated PG-13 | Time: 1:31

This spoof of “The Hunger Games” comes courtesy of the folks who brought you the “Scary Movie” franchise, “Disaster Movie,” “Vampires Suck” and other send-ups of trendy movies. Characters include brave archer Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh of “Switched at Birth”) and co-competitor Peter Malarkey (Cody Allen Christian of “Surrogates,” “Pretty Little Liars”). Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer direct.

Critics haven’t been kind. For example, from “The ‘humor’ seems to have been created by typing out as many pop culture references as possible and asking the computer to randomly place them in amongst the overly milked sexual/gay/mental health-related jokes. There is the occasional joke that made me laugh, but this doesn’t allow this film to be classed as comedy, as I’ve chuckled more to ‘CSI’ at 3 a.m.”
