The Star’s high school athletes of the week for Nov. 7

Ty Hughes

SCHOOL: Liberty North

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Cross country

Hughes blew by the field Saturday at the Class 3, District 8 race over the weekend — his final tuneup for Saturday’s Missouri Class 3 state championship race in Jefferson City. He won the 5-kilometer district meet in 16 minutes, 18.9 seconds, the second-best time in the eight district races in Class 3. That certainly makes Hughes a contender for the state title Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Course. He took eighth last season.

Kelli Kalinoski

SCHOOL: Olathe East

YEAR: Junior

SPORT: Volleyball

Olathe East captured its first Kansas Class 6A volleyball championship Saturday. The Hawks wouldn’t have been there without Kalinoski, a junior libero who recorded 89 digs in the state tournament. She had 22 digs in the championship match against Blue Valley Northwest and was selected to the all-tournament team following the match. Kalinoski was named the co-player of the year in the Sunflower League earlier this season.
