College honors: Johnson County’s Jorge Rivero wins NJCAA soccer player of the week

• Johnson County Community College freshman forward Jorge Rivero, an Olathe North grad who leads the Cavaliers with 18 goals, was chosen NJCAA Division I men’s soccer player of the week. He scored twice in the Cavaliers’ 4-1 win over Allen in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Johnson County plays Coffeyville in the semifinals Thursday.

• Roy Wedge, a Lawrence High graduate who won The Star’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, was chosen cross country runner of the year in the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference. Wedge, a MIT senior, won the conference title Sunday and the Engineers are ranked 16th in NCAA Division III.
