Man wounded in Independence robbery

An attempted armed robbery at an Independence smoke shop left one victim wounded in the leg and the other beaten with the handgun at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

Independence police are investigating the incident that occurred at a discount smoke shop at the 200 block of north Missouri 291. The two victims were leaving the smoke shop when they were approached by a man armed with a handgun. The suspect struck one victim with the handgun before shooting the second victim in the right calf. Both victims sustained non-life threatening injures and were treated at local hospitals.

Police described the suspect as black with a short “Afro” style haircut with curls. He fled the scene in what is believed to be 90’s model, maroon Ford Taurus. No loss was reported by either victim.
