On Saturday, Nov. 23, supporters in more than 75 communities throughout the nation will participate in an exciting, family-friendly walk to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. One of those communities is in Kansas City’s own backyard, at Community America Ballpark. Award-winning builder Summit Custom Homes is the presenting sponsor for the event.

“St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is saving lives and families never have to pay for their child’s treatment,” said Megan Fratzke, marketing manager for Summit Custom Homes. “Our involvement with the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is such a rewarding experience and we wanted to extend our support of the children’s hospital through the walk. It is so amazing to see all of the donations come in. We keep raising the donation goal and our team is continually exceeding those goals. It is truly remarkable to see a team come together like that.”
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the global leader in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other deadly diseases. Because the majority of St. Jude’s funding comes from the public, St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most — saving kids regardless of their financial situation. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.
“We are so excited for the walk,” said Kevin Stucker, vice president of sales and marketing. “Summit employees are recruiting their families and friends to join the walk and we’re inviting Summit homeowners (current and future) to walk with us as well. A few days ago we had a kick-off breakfast at our office and it was cool to see the team get so excited for the event. We’re joining together to save lives and that’s an amazing thing.”
When asked how much money the Summit Custom Homes team has raised for the walk so far, Stucker replied, “We’re almost to $10,000. We started with a low goal and we quickly beat it. We have to keep pushing up the goal because we really want to challenge ourselves.”
Earlier this year, representatives from Summit Custom Homes visited St. Jude in Memphis, Tenn., with 30 other Dream Home builders from around the country and got a tour of the hospital as well as its newest addition, the St. Jude Red Frog Events Proton Therapy Center. Opening in 2015, the Proton Therapy Center will be the first proton radiation therapy (PRT) center in the world dedicated solely to children, designed specifically to meet the needs of young patients.
“It was truly amazing to see,” Fratzke said. “We work with St. Jude year round but to actually visit the hospital in person really drives it home. St. Jude is doing astounding things for children across the world.”
The walk takes place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Community America Ballpark, 1800 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Check-in is at 8 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. You can join the Summit Custom Homes team and/or make donations at http://walk.stjude.org/summitcustomhomes.
“I really encourage anyone who is looking for a way to help support the cause to get on the website and form a team to walk on Nov. 23,” Fratzke said. “Better yet, join the Summit team.”
