Tess Herder

SCHOOL: Lee’s Summit

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Tennis

A year after sitting out high school tennis, Herder returned in style for her senior season. She won the Missouri Class 2 singles championship Saturday, dropping only seven games in four matches over the course of the state tournament. Herder easily dispatched St. Joseph’s Academy freshman Caroline Pozo (6-1, 6-1) in the finals. She plans to attend Drake on a tennis scholarship next season.

Stephen Mugeche

SCHOOL: Blue Springs

YEAR: Junior

SPORT: Cross country

When Blue Springs runner Simon Belete won the Missouri Class 4 state championship last fall, Mugeche said it fueled him to follow his teammate’s path. He’s off to a good start. Mugeche won the Class 4, District 8 race Saturday. He crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 35 seconds, a full 13 seconds ahead of second-place Cole Rockhold, a senior from Truman.
