Chase Hanna of Leawood was honored Tuesday as the Kansas Golf Association’s player of the year.

Hanna, 19, a freshman on the Kansas men’s golf team, set a record in winning the Kansas Junior Amateur and won the Kansas Amateur in July at Indian Hills Country Club. He is the only golfer besides Johnny Stevens in 1960 to win both tournaments in the same year.

“Winning the state amateur is the pinnacle of state golf,” KU golf coach Jamie Bermel said in a statement. “And for a young kid to do that is very impressive on Chase’s part.”

Hanna, a Shawnee Mission East grad, also won the Kenneth Smith Award as the top high school golfer in the Kansas City metro area this year.

Sam Stevens was the KGA’s junior golfer of the year, Steven Newman won the senior golfer of the year award and Pete Krsnich was the mid-amateur of the year. All three are from Wichita.
