Staff and wire reports

The Supporters' Shield is headed to New York.

In the final game of the MLS regular season Sunday, the New York Red Bulls defeated the Chicago Fire 5-2 to clinch the Supporters' Shield — reserved for the top-point getter in the league — one day after Sporting Kansas City had regained a two-point lead in the race for the honor.

New York also clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, dropping Sporting KC to the No. 2 seed.

Sporting KC will face the third-seeded New England Revolution in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The dates of the first-round games have not yet been announced.

Sporting KC went 1-0-1 against New England this season, including a 3-0 victory on Aug. 10 at Sporting Park.

MLS: Playoff spots clinched

• The Houston Dynamo beat D.C. United 2-1 on Sunday and wrapped up an MLS playoff spot for the third straight season. D.C. United, 3-24-7, was winless in its final 12 games and set the MLS record for fewest victories in a season.

• Juan Agudelo scored midway through the first half and the New England Revolution beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Sunday to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2009.
