From an impeccable skyline view to the sleek lines of their contemporary home, One Park Place residents John and Jane Rowe have spent the last year turning their spacious condo on the 16th floor into a home that’s hard not to envy.
One Park Place
The couple, who own and operate nine Speedy’s Convenience Stores, formerly resided in a traditional Tudor-style home in St. Joseph, Mo. But as their children grew up and out of the house, they began looking at condos in the Plaza and downtown areas in anticipation of moving into a maintenance-free dwelling in the heart of Kansas City.
The couple’s search lasted five years and they were determined to find the best view in the city, one that would never be compromised.
“It’s hard to get a good view of the skyline if you’re in the midst of it,” John said. “In many of the buildings we toured, you looked out the window and saw your neighbor or the building next door. The minute we walked into One Park Place, I knew I would never be satisfied with a lesser view. There are other great views in Kansas City but there are no better views of Kansas City.”
Although the three-bedroom, 31/2-bathroom condo they purchased was move-in ready, the couple turned to long-time friend Tracy Stearns, along with Meredith Quinn and Janelle Kimsey from 360 Architecture, to create a one-of-a-kind space inside the tower.
Black bamboo flooring was installed throughout the open-concept living, dining and kitchen areas. An eye-catching slate gray marble fireplace from Carthage Stoneworks was installed, creating a focal point in the living area.
Another important feature of their space is the art, many pieces purchased from local artists. Each side of the fireplace is flanked by Tom Corbin female statuettes, set in front of floor-to-ceiling mirrors purchased at Westport Glass & Mirror.
A modular wall, both functional and visually stunning, creates separation between the living and dining areas.
In a bedroom-turned-media room, local artist Joshua Rizer’s “Mangst: Down, Down and Away ” is perfectly situated near a wall-length screen of Times Square.
From inside their kitchen, light shines abundantly on the illuminated surfaces of granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances which, along with a granite tile backsplash, create a fully equipped workspace ideal for creating lunch for two or dinner for 12. Double-compartment stainless steel sinks and energy-efficient stainless steel GE appliances including refrigerator, microwave oven, gas range, gas oven and dishwasher complete the space.
The contemporary feel is carried through in the couple’s master bedroom by careful placement of iconic furniture. Two womb chairs, by Knoll, and a Noguchi table pair together to create a comfortable sitting area. A mid-century modern Eames chair, nestled in the corner, also adds to the flair of the room. The custom-made leather headboard was inspired by a photo Jane found in Sun Valley Home and Design magazine.
Walk-in closets are located in each bedroom and features of the en suite master bathroom include a large soaking tub and shower, granite countertops, dual sinks, ample drawer space and under-sink storage.
Though the view was a selling feature, convenience and amenities were also instrumental in their decision.
“There’s so little maintenance about condo living at One Park Place,” Jane said. “Coming from acreage and a large multistory home to a condo where all of our living is done on one level is nice. And with all of the amenities offered at One Park Place, there’s just so much to do right here.”
The indoor and outdoor amenities provided at One Park Place cater to those, like the Rowes, who look forward to enjoying more leisure time. Entertaining family and friends is made easy with the wine-tasting room, temperature-controlled wine cellar, bar area, demonstration kitchen and party room.
The indoor saltwater lap pool, oversized whirlpool and fully equipped fitness center that houses the latest in cardio and strength training equipment beckon. An adjacent fitness studio, complete with hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling mirrors, is an ideal spot in which to enjoy yoga, Pilates and a variety of other fitness activities. The outdoor swimming pool, spa and barbecue area are One Park Place’s answer to open-air entertaining.
One Park Place also offers a distinctive advantage: a tax advantage. One Park Place has received a real estate property tax abatement that will reduce the amount of property taxes payable by approximately 90 percent, representing a substantial, bottom-line benefit for its homeowners until 2016.
