We lurked in the shadows to capture moments of terror … surprise … and nervous laughter at two West Bottoms haunted houses.

The Edge of Hell, 1300 W. 12th St., forces visitors to confront their phobias — like claustrophobia and fear of snakes. The Beast, 1401 W. 13th St., is all about being lost and finding your way out.

Full Moon Productions also operates two other haunted houses in the West Bottoms: Chambers of Poe, themed around the horror of writer Edgar Allan Poe, and Macabre Cinema, which features horror movie sets and props.

Edge of Hell and the Beast are now open nightly (at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. otherwise) through Nov. 2, then the weekend of Nov. 8-9. Poe and Macabre Cinema open at 8 p.m. Friday, Sunday and Halloween night, and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. For ticket info, visit fullmoonprod.com, where you’ll find links to each house.

“Mistress of the Dark” Elvira (aka Cassandra Peterson, a native of Manhattan, Kan.) and the Travel Channel recently put the West Bottoms haunted houses on a list of 10 “Best Halloween Attractions” in the United States for 2013. Visit travelchannel.com to read more.
