Sporting Kansas City inducted former head coach Bob Gansler into the inaugural class of Sporting Legends at halftime of Fridays match against D.C. United.

Special to The Star
Gansler managed the club during 1999-2006. He won 95 matches, the seventh most in MLS history. Gansler led the then-Wizards to five straight playoff appearances during 2000-2004, including the 2000 MLS Cup and Supporters Shield trophies. He also led Kansas City to the 2004 U.S. Open Cup.
Gansler joins former forward Preki and goalkeeper Tony Meola as the first inductees into Sporting Legends.
To be among the first batch, we can stand here and go all humble on you and all this sort of stuff, but it is nice when people remember what you did was worthwhile, Gansler said. I would think those two guys (Preki and Meola) are of a similar persuasion. Im grateful to be among the first three.
Gansler coached Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes in Kansas City and on the U.S. Mens National Team.
Ive been asked repeatedly, does (Vermes success) surprise me? Peter has talent, and no matter what he wouldve done he wouldve brought his personality, which is hard work every day. Theres no such thing as no, Gansler said. This has been rebuilt, and you see Peters paw prints all over this.
Collin not available
Sporting KC defender Aurelien Collin was out of the lineup for the second time in three matches.
Collin missed Fridays match for yellow-card accumulation after picking up a caution in the 25th minute of a scoreless draw against Houston on Oct. 9. Collin was a substitute in the 1-0 victory at Columbus on Oct. 5, but didnt play.
D.C. chasing history
D.C. United has four MLS Cups in franchise history, but it is trying to keep its name out of the MLS record book for entirely different reasons this season.
If United, 3-23-7, fails to win its season finale at home against Houston, it will own the record for the fewest wins in a season. The current record of four wins was set by Chivas USA in 2005.
United became the fifth team in league history to fail to win a road game after losing on Friday to Sporting KC.
Sporting KC has a seven-match unbeaten streak against D.C. United. Five of those seven were 1-0 decisions, like Fridays match.
Fridays attendance was 18,932. All 17 MLS matches at Sporting Park were sold out. Sporting KC has sold out 33 consecutive regular-season matches.
