A 26-year-old Leavenworth woman was killed Wednesday when her vehicle struck a power pole and live wires came down upon her.
Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. at Seventh and Olive streets. Witnesses said the woman’s car left the roadway and struck the pole.
The woman got out of the car and was apparently trying to get two small children out of the back seat when she came into contact with the power line.
Witnesses reported the line was arcing, and they heard a small explosion.
The woman was unresponsive when police arrived and was pronounced dead at a hospital. A 3-year-old boy and a 42-day-old girl in the back seat were unharmed.
Kitchens said an autopsy would be performed. The woman’s name was not immediately released.
