Two Martini Corner hotspots — the Velvet Dog and the Empire Room — have “closed for remodel” signs on their front doors. Partner Vince Rook declined to comment and partner Chris Seferyn did not return phone calls or emails.

The Velvet Dog opened nearly two decades ago at 400 E. 31st St. and has since become known for its martinis and outdoor courtyard. Its menu includes such items as a brisket mac-n-cheese and Sunrise Sandwich with sliced ham and Dijon maple mayo on french toast sourdough.

The Empire Room opened across the street, at 334 E. 31st St., in 2000. It is described as an “upscale boutique-style night club for the entertainment and beverage connoisseur,” and features local and national DJs.

Martini Corner Ltd., headquartered at 400 E. 31st St., has had a couple of legal issues lately, including a judgment for a tax lien of $6,238 by the Missouri Department of Revenue in July.
