The husband-and-wife operators of a former Kansas City medical clinic have been ordered to pay more than $660,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to health care and tax fraud.

Carol Ann Ryser and Michael Earl Ryser operated Health Centers of America in south Kansas City until it was closed in March as part of their plea agreement with prosecutors in U.S. District Court in Kansas City.

At their recent sentencing in federal court, Michael Ryser, 68, was ordered to serve two years in prison. Carol Ryser, 76, was placed on probation for three years. As a condition of her plea, she also was required to surrender her medical license.

The charges against the Rysers stemmed from a series false claims made to government and private insurance providers. They also admitted filing a false income tax return. The majority of the $668,538.53 in restitution is owed to the Internal Revenue Service, according to court records.

The clinic specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
