One phone call later, the school principal and security officers were in the class searching backpacks and students. Two students were taken into custody after the gun was found concealed on a student, district spokeswoman Ebony Walker said.
The investigation determined that the gun probably was brought into the class by the other student in custody, she said.
The witness who texted her parents saw the gun about 10 a.m. A parent called the school office, and officials went to the classroom, locked it down and began searching.
The junior high school, at 9010 Old Santa Fe Road in Kansas City, requires all students to enter the school through a metal detector.
The district does not know how the gun got past the detectors, Walker said.
“That’s one of the things we’re trying to find out,” she said.
It is also not clear why the student brought the gun to school.
