Why are Republicans losing in the fallout over the government shutdown?

A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll suggests that it’s because Americans view the Republicans’ motives as more political.

The poll found that seven in 10 people agreed with the statement that Republicans are “putting their own political agenda ahead of what is good for the country,” The Washington Post said.

Meantime, just 27 percent said that the GOP is “demonstrating strong leadership and standing up for what they believe in.”

Compare that to what people said about President Obama.

Some 46 percent of respondents said he is “demonstrating strong leadership” while 51 percent said he is putting his own political agenda first, according to The Post.

Obama can’t feel great about those numbers. But compared to the GOP, he’s in a lot better shape.
