KU will play host to an open practice and scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9:45 a.m. until approximately 11 a.m.
The event is free to the public and will take place just hours before the Kansas football team plays Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
“With practice starting three weeks earlier than normal, this will be a great way for our fans to get another early look at our team,” KU coach Bill Self said. “We didn’t show much at all during Late Night (in the Phog) other than 20 minutes of bad ball. This way KU fans can come see us before heading to the football game.”
The announcement of the event comes after thousands of fans were turned away from Allen Fieldhouse on the evening of Late Night in the Phog. More than 20,000 fans had lined up outside of Allen Fieldhouse for the event, and the evening was plagued by line-cutting and a lack of crowd control. As a result, many fans waited in line for hours before being turned away.
KU announced that doors to Allen Fieldhouse for the scrimmage will open at 9 a.m. Fans will not be permitted to “save seats” for others, and limited concessions services will be available until 10:15.
”The energy and enthusiasm surrounding Kansas Basketball is at an all-time high,” KU athletics director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. “And Coach Self has generously offered this opportunity for more KU fans to see the Jayhawks in action before our first game. I’m grateful to him and all the Jayhawk fans who are eagerly anticipating this coming season.”
Here’s more information, via KU, on parking for the event:
Fans coming to the open practice can park free of charge until noon in Lots 54, 71, 90, 125, and 127. Lot 72, northwest of Allen Fieldhouse, will be reserved for football game-day permit holders; accessible patrons coming to the open practice can park in Lot 72 as well.
