Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Rick Armstrong will head a new school police department in Kansas City, Kan., school officials said Wednesday.
At a meeting Tuesday night, the Board of Education picked Armstrong to head the department beginning in February, after he retires from the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department.
Armstrong, a 35-year police veteran, has been police chief since 2010. He was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
But in the news release announcing the new position, he said he is looking forward to establishing innovative programs to enhance student, staff and building safety.
The school board previously decided to do away with its current use of campus security officers and form its own department of sworn law enforcement officers.
“We are thrilled to have someone of Chief Armstrong’s experience and qualifications to assist us in forming our new police department,” Superintendent Cynthia Lane said in the release.
