Jackson County prosecutors have filed assault charges in connection with a shooting in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine Jazz District.

Jenairio J. Willis, 24, is accused of shooting another man at 19th Street and Highland Avenue early Sept. 28.

The victim was being dropped off at a hospital when a witness pointed out a vehicle driving by.

Police chased the vehicle until it crashed and arrested Willis.

He initially was charged with fleeing and eluding and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The victim later identified Willis as the shooter.

On Tuesday, prosecutors charged Willis with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, according to court documents.

The victim told police that he was standing outside when a fight broke out. He said someone walked up, stuck a gun in his back and demanded “his stuff.” When he said no, the gunman shot him in the chest and leg, the victim said.
