The American Royal BBQ: Have fun, but no sampling

Updated: 2013-10-04T13:46:28Z

More than 500 teams participate each year in the American Royal World Series of Barbecue, a smoky ceremony billed as the largest barbecue contest in the world.

The annual event runs through Sunday at the American Royal Complex in the West Bottoms.

Although live entertainment, vendors and fireworks are offered on Friday and Saturday, the celebrated contest caters to participants more than curious bystanders.

The event’s official disclaimer reads that “sampling of contest foods is prohibited.”

Attendees who have the most fun, consequently, already have established relationships with one or more of the competitors.

For more information, visit The American Royal or call 816-221-9800. Admission on Friday and Saturday is $13 in advance and $15 at the gate (with discounts for kids on Saturday).
