Updated: 2013-10-04T02:11:58Z

Eastbound Interstate 70 at 72nd Street in Kansas City, Kan., was closed Thursday night after a dump truck crashed into a bridge overpass.

The 72nd Street bridge over the interstate also is closed until engineers can inspect the damage to determine if the span is safe for motorists.

The wreck was reported about 8:25 p.m. The truck driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The extent of his injuries was not available.

A spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation reported that the truck was driving with its bed raised when it struck the bridge.

It was estimated that the closure will last for at least several hours.
