Two life sentences for fiery KCK slaying of woman and toddler

Updated: 2013-10-04T00:32:06Z

A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Thursday to two life sentences for killing his girlfriend and her 2-year-old niece.

Curtis T. Horn, 37, will have to serve the sentences consecutively. Under Kansas law, he must serve 40 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Horn strangled 34-year-old Brandi Johnson last February inside an apartment in the 1800 block of North 76th Drive. He then set the apartment on fire, killing 2-year-old Amiyah McClenton, whom Johnson was babysitting. A number of people, including 15 children, escaped the burning building without injuries.

Horn pleaded guilty in August in Wyandotte County District Court to two counts of first-degree felony murder.
