A Liberty man was charged Wednesday in the shooting death of his wife of 23 years.

Clay County prosecutors charged Ervin D. Carroll, 45, with second-degree murder in the shotgun death of Linda Carroll. She was killed Tuesday night in an apartment in the 300 block of Darrel Court. Another woman was wounded in the foot.

Carroll was also charged with assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

The wounded woman was a friend of Linda Carroll. She told police that Ervin Carroll piled his wife’s belongings on the floor and told her to leave. He later approached the women with a shotgun and when Linda Carroll grabbed it to push the barrel away, it went off, according to court documents.

Bond for Ervin Carroll was set at $500,000.
