Second dog park to open next year
The city hopes open its second dog park next spring on a seven-acre site near Victoria Drive and Douglas Street
Gary Welty, superintendent of park construction, said the city recently approved the development plan for the fenced spot where dogs can run off-leash and play with other pups.
The project cost is about $250,000, with a lot of the work done in-house. The land was donated by Polytainers Inc. and UtiliCorp United Inc. (now Aquila Inc.), said Tom Lovell, parks administrator.
Officials expect the park to be popular. Based on spot counts, the city estimates that 200 to 300 people daily visit the city’s only other such area, Happy Tails Dog Park at 1251 S.E. Ranson Road.
To prevent prescription drug abuse and theft, the police department will take back unwanted drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26.
The public may bring medications to the parking lots of Raytown City Hall, 10000 E. 59th St., or the Apple Market, Missouri 350 and Raytown Road. Police will not accept hypodermic syringes or other sharps, aerosols, or illegal drugs.
The police department also has a mailbox-shaped, steel box in its lobby for residents to dispose of unwanted drugs at any time.
Meeting Thursday on Route AA
Residents and other interested parties are invited to a meeting Thursday to discuss the upcoming widening of Route AA.
From 5 to 7 p.m. at the Grain Valley Community Center, citizens can drop into the open-house-style event and review draft plans for the $3 million project and offer their comments.
The cost is being shared by the city and the Missouri Department of Transportation. MoDOT says the upgrade could include:
• Expanding parts of Buckner-Tarsney (Route AA) to two “through” lanes in each direction and a center two-way left turn lane.
• Installing a multi-use path on the east side of the road and a standard sidewalk on the west side with enhanced crosswalks.
• Enhancing street lighting.
• Improving curbs, gutters and drainage.
• Upgrading a railroad crossing.
