Weird spelling

Those spelling rules we learned, I’ve feared,

Do not apply when things get weird.

In fact, that very word’s a sample

Of how supposed rules trample;

For “I” must come before an “E”

Unless they choose to follow “C.”

But funny thing — that rule has sneered

When word itself involved is weird.

Yes, weird — a word of ancient mintage

Deriving from old English vintage.

So take all these lessons and see how they’ve veered;

No matter the spelling, it always looks weird.
