Neither team was able to put up any points in the opening quarter, but the Jaguars changed that on the first play of the second quarter.
Facing a third and 3 from the Mill Valley 44, Chieftain senior quarterback Tyler Ford threw a pass over the middle. Mill Valley senior linebacker TJ Phillips took it from there.
I was spying the quarterback, Phillips said. I intercepted the ball, spun out and went down our sidelines for the pick six.
Phillips return on the interception went for 55 yards and put Mill Valley ahead 7-0.
The Mill Valley offense got busy on its next possession, moving the ball 51 yards in eight plays. The Jaguars had a fourth-and-goal at the 1 and went with three running backs. The one that got the call was junior Tyler Garrison. He plunged into the end zone with 6:49 left in the first half for a 14-0 Mill Valley lead.
The Jaguars added a touchdown in the third quarter on an 8-yard run by junior quarterback Ty Bruce with 7:49 left in the third quarter.
Mill Valleys final touchdown of the night came on the second play of the fourth quarter when a low, rolling Tonganoxie punt was fielded at the 50 by sophomore Christian Jegen. Jegen went the distance and helped put this one out of reach.
Tonganoxie avoided the shutout on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 1:14 left in the game.
With the victory, the Jaguars improved to 4-0, while Tonganoxie lost for the first time this season.
Tonganoxie is a good, physical and disciplined team, Mill Valley coach Joel Applebee said. Offensively we were struggling with inexperience at the skill positions. Our defense was good.
Mill Valleys Bruce did some damage both on the ground and in the passing game. Bruce, who missed a gamer earlier this year because of a concussion, rushed 27 times for 103 yards. He completed six of 14 passes for 85 yards with one interception.
Im learning, he said I have to keep practicing and learn to read the defenses better. I need to be more patient, trust my receivers and my blockers.
Mill Valley punter Connor Mills had some sensational kicks. He had a punt downed at the 1 in the second quarter and had a punt in the third quarter that went out of bounds at the 5-yard line.
