Amazon is refreshing its lineup of tablet computers with faster, lighter Kindle Fire HDX devices. The 7-inch and 8.9-inch versions also have sharper, more colorful displays, and more pixels per inch than the latest iPad. The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX starts at $379 for 16 gigabytes of memory, while the 7-inch starts at $229, also with 16 GB. The 7-inch will ship Oct. 18; the 8.9-inch will ship starting Nov. 7.
Missing a market
The buying power of African-Americans continues to grow, but less than 3 percent of the $75 billion advertisers spent last year in the U.S. on television, magazine, Internet and radio ads went to media focused on black audiences, a new Nielsen report says. With 43 million African-Americans in the U.S. representing about 14 percent of the population more than half under the age of 35 advertisers are not effectively reaching a growing population projected to account for $1.3 trillion in consumer spending by 2017, according to Nielsen.
Mortgage applications rise
The Mortgage Bankers Associations index of mortgage applications advanced 5.5 percent in the week ended Sept. 20. A measure of purchases rose 6.6 percent last week.
