Ariana Restaurant to open in former Waid’s spot in south KC

Updated: 2013-09-23T15:09:46Z

The breakfast menu will return, so will many of the employees.

But the new Ariana Restaurant replacing the Waid’s restaurant in south Kansas City has a new owner and a new direction.

Owner Shaheen Shah Gul has already spent several long days cleaning and sprucing up the space at 1130 W. 103rd St. with the help of his family members. His mother is a native of Kabul, Afghanistan, and he plans to use many of her recipes for dishes on the lunch and dinner menu, and luncheon buffet, along with other dishes from the Middle East. Breakfast will be standard American items.

Many of the former Waid’s employees will return, including two chefs. They saw Waid’s regulars often, sometimes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“They know the customers, the system,” Gul said.

He also plans to keep many of the shadow boxes lining the dining room walls and showcasing Kansas City memorabilia. But he will take down the shadow box highlighting Waid’s longtime history.

“I don’t want anyone to be confused. This is a new restaurant,” Gul said.

Ariana Restaurant is scheduled to open in early October.
