Jackson County prosecutors also charged James E. Bell, 56, with armed criminal action.
According to court documents, officers responded to a cutting last Friday in the 2800 block of East 77th Street. They found a woman bleeding from numerous injuries about the neck.
At the hospital, the victim told detectives that she had picked up Bell, her boyfriend. When he asked why she was no longer calling him, she said she wanted to end their relationship.
Bell, the victim told police, then asked for one last hug. The victim agreed. That is when, according to court documents, Bell began hitting her in the back of the neck. The victim first thought Bell was using his fist.
Bell then left the car, and the victim was able to drive to a residence, where someone helped her, the court filing said.
The victim, who according to doctors had received nine stab wounds, died Wednesday. The Jackson County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, saying the victim died of organ failure due to sharp-force injuries to the neck and upper torso. Prosecutors did not release her name.
Bell turned himself in to authorities Wednesday.
