Thunderstorms disrupt power and travel in Kansas City area

Updated: 2013-09-20T14:49:52Z

Strong thunderstorms moved through the Kansas City area Thursday evening, leaving fallen trees, dark homes and flooded streets in their wake.

KCP&L reported power outages throughout the area with the biggest concentrations in Gladstone, Liberty, northeast Johnson County and the Raytown area.

Truman Road was closed east of Hardy Avenue after more than a foot of water covered parts of that roadway. The Johnson County sheriff reported that Craig Drive in Merriam was blocked by a tree, and Clark Drive in Roeland Park was impassable.

Police scanner traffic indicated that numerous vehicles were stranded in high water.
