What baby boomer cant remember The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle?
By Lewis W. Diuguid
The Kansas City Star
In often repeated scenes, Bullwinkle, the moose, asks Rocky, the squirrel, Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit from my hat?
Rocky incredulously asks, Again?
Bullwinkle goes on: Rustle up my sleeve.... And then something monstrous surfaces.
A similar cartoonish scene is being replayed in Congress with Republicans in the House again going after the Affordable Care Act, which they affectionately call Obamacare. This time they plan to vote to pull the money from the national health care initiative after nearly four dozen unsuccessful attempts to kill or weaken the 2010 law.
That seems more like a Roadrunner & Wile E. Coyote episode. President Barack Obama is the political Roadrunner.
The impasse between Congress and the White House could lead to a government shutdown as the federal fiscal year is set to start Oct. 1 with no hope for a budget agreement in sight. Thats no cartoon, and its not funny.
If that is not bad enough, the House Republicans plan to vote to cut $40 billion over 10 years from the federal food stamp program. Thats not funny either.
It is occurring despite the U.S. Census releasing numbers this week showing that poverty remains a stubborn problem in this country with 15 percent, or nearly 47 million Americans, struggling to make it.
