High school athletes of the week for Sept. 19

Updated: 2013-09-19T00:24:39Z

Alec Van Wormer

SCHOOL: Lee’s Summit West

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Soccer

The reigning Suburban Red Conference defender of the year is making a run to become a repeat winner. Van Wormer captained Lee’s Summit West to first place in the Blue Springs South round robin tournament last week. The Titans defeated Raytown South (10-0), Lee’s Summit (1-0) and Rockhurst (6-1) — the latter two teams are ranked in the Missouri Class 3 state poll. Lee’s Summit West has allowed only four goals in seven games this season, a credit to a defense anchored by Van Wormer.

Arianna Person

SCHOOL: St. James Academy

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Volleyball

St. James Academy was crowned the champion of the MO/KAN Invitational on Saturday, and Person was at the center of it all. She had a team-best 45 kills, along with 40 digs and four blocks in the 24-team tournament. By no coincidence, the Thunder won all six of its matches Saturday. Person, a four-year starter, has committed to play volleyball at Belmont next year. She leads St. James Academy in kills and digs this season.
