— An Army officer has made a surprise visit to see his twin daughters at their St. Joseph high school before a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports that Kody Kemerling had been in training in Mississippi for the past month. During a four-day pass to come home before his deployment, he showed up Friday at a pep assembly at Central High School.

Just after the Pledge of Allegiance, all eyes turned to the lone man in a military uniform. Kemerling was nearly tackled by his two daughters — freshmen cheerleaders Maria and Micaela Kemerling.

Kody Kemerling served in Iraq in 2005 for a year. This next tour will take him to Afghanistan for retrograde operations that include closing bases.
