Miami County highway shooting believed accidental

A bullet that struck a man driving on Interstate 35 in Miami County on Sept. 6 may have come from the gun of a juvenile who was target shooting nearby, officials said Friday.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating what officials feared had been an intentional act by a sniper.

A 33-year-old Olathe man had to be hospitalized after he was struck in the leg by a bullet as he and his family were traveling south on I-35 about 8 p.m. near Edgerton Road. No one else was injured.

Officers from Miami and Johnson counties as well as the Kansas Highway Patrol responded. A manhunt in nearby cornfields in the dark failed to locate a suspect.

On Friday, Miami County Undersheriff Wayne Minckley said deputies learned a juvenile was target shooting on a relative’s property nearby and using the dam of a pond to shoot into. The highway is on the other side of the pond.

While the incident may have been accidental, the case still will be referred to the county attorney for review, Minckley said.
