So much for Saturday’s college football game at Arrowhead Stadium between teams coached by former Super Bowl heroes.

Grambling announced Wednesday it had fired coach Doug Williams. The Tigers play Lincoln University of Jefferson City on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in a game billed as the Missouri Classic. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m.
Lincoln is coached by Mike Jones, who while a member of the St. Louis Rams, tackled Tennessee’s Kevin Dyson 1 yard short of the goal line on the game’s final play, preserving the Rams’ victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Williams was the MVP of Super Bowl XXII, throwing four touchdown passes in the second quarter of Washington’s 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Williams was the first African-American quarterback to start a Super Bowl.
But if Williams is in Kansas City on Saturday, it will be as a fan.
Williams, a former Grambling hero, returned to his alma mater in 1997 to succeed legendary Eddie Robinson as coach. Williams was there for seven years, compiling a 53-17 record with three Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, before taking a front office position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Williams returned to Grambling in 2011 and won another SWAC title in his first year. But the team fell to 1-10 last season, and enters Saturday’s game 0-2. His career record is 62-33.
Williams’ son, D.J. Williams, is the Tigers’ starting quarterback.
“I talked to D.J. briefly,” Williams told the Monroe (La.) News-Star. “I know D.J. is emotional, but I told him he has to be strong, and he told me he will.”
Williams told reporters that he received a call from school president Frank Pogue on Wednesday morning informing him of his release.
Running backs coach George Ragsdale is Grambling’s interim head coach.
Grambling’s appearance will be the second for the program in Arrowhead. The Tigers played the first college game in the stadium, defeating Mississippi Valley State in 1972 in Arrowhead’s first year.
