A man in a pickup truck allegedly tried to grab a 13-year-old boy who was walking to school Tuesday morning, Kansas City police said.

The boy said he was walking to Raytown Middle School about 7:30 a.m. when a man pulled up in a brown, full-size pickup truck at Hawthorne Avenue and Pittman Road and offered him a ride. The man had been driving slowly around the neighborhood, the boy told police.

When the boy declined the ride, the man got out of his truck and “jumped over the hood” to try to grab him, police said. The boy ran into the woods and to his school, which was several hundred feet away.

The boy told his first-hour teacher what happened, and the school called police. The Raytown School District sent home notes to parents about the incident, police said.

The man was described as white and in his 40s with an average build. His truck had tinted windows.

Police sent extra patrols to the area but could not find the man or pickup truck.
