— A sighting of a bobcat has been confirmed in suburban St. Louis.

Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer says a resident took a picture of an animal in his backyard on Sept. 5, thinking it was a mountain lion. The Missouri Department of Conservation examined the photo and determined it was a bobcat.

Boyer says bobcats occasionally kill livestock and pets, but generally stay away from humans. He encourages anyone encountering a bobcat to remain calm and stay as far away as possible. Hold small children and avoid rapid movements like running. Make your presence known then slowly back away and leave the area.
